How to Start AI Roleplay

Choose a story or character, establish your role and write a first message that gives the AI something to respond to. A practical starting point for your first session.

Guide by Plotto team · Updated

Quick start

  1. Choose a character for one-on-one chat, or read a story’s premise and cast.
  2. Sign in. Open the character chat, or choose your role, assign AI roles and confirm the story-room setup and any cost.
  3. Respond to the opening with one action or question. Build on the reply instead of planning the whole ending.

1. Choose the experience, not just the avatar

Start with a multi-character scenario if you want a shared setting, an ensemble cast and a plot to step into. Choose a standalone character for a focused one-on-one conversation. They are different starting points: a character session is not automatically a story room. Read the premise and character introduction before opening either, and choose a tone you actually want to explore.

2. Give yourself a role and a small goal

For a story, sign in and select one eligible role for yourself before creating a room. Assign other roles to AI, or leave vacancies and set joining permissions for people. Review the setup and any creation cost, then confirm. Each new room has its own progress. For standalone character chat, open the character’s chat entry; use persona settings to introduce your identity and relationship. A small goal is enough to begin.

3. Write an opening the character can act on

Combine a visible action with a clear question or decision. This gives the AI more context than a bare greeting, without dictating its reply. Describe what your own role does; leave other characters free to react. In a mystery, ask about one clue rather than demanding the entire solution. In a relationship scene, introduce a shared event rather than assuming feelings have already changed.

Writing example: “I place the sealed letter on the desk and keep my hand on it. You were the last person in the archive—do you recognize this seal?”

4. Continue, correct and check before spending

Follow one detail from the reply and make your next move. If the AI confuses a name or event, briefly restate the relevant fact rather than assuming perfect recall. Basic multi-character AI chat inside story rooms is free with no message limit. Room creation or renewal, standalone character chat, paid models and extra features may cost coins or require payment. Daily check-in rewards must be claimed; check the current amount and any price shown before confirming an action.
